Rugby is widely played at colleges and universities throughout the United States. There are well over a thousand (1,000+) college teams creating the largest segment of rugby participants in the nation. As with the youth/HS segment, female participation at the college level has exploded and continues to see the fastest growth in participation in this segment.
Rugby is often offered as a club sport because teams are usually administered by a student club sports department rather than the institution's intercollegiate athletics department. However, a growing number of schools are "promoting rugby to varsity status, committing resources for scholarships and paid coaches, or giving rugby an elevated status short of full varsity status." (Wikipedia).
