While most collegiate teams are club-based, there are more teams being supported as NCAA-sanctioned varsity (women's only), non-sanctioned varsity, and quasi-varsity rugby programs on their respective campuses.

These rugby programs may or may not offer scholarships. If they do, they are likely funded by an alumni association tied to the rugby program. And, in contrast to other rugby programs that are club-based, the rugby team(s) at these schools have regular access to coaches, practice/competitie fields, conditioning facilities, sports medicine personnel, and often transportation through an arrangement with the club sports and/or intercollegiate athletic department.
